Sometimes there will be smoke that smells kind of like oil burning off thats dark greyish in color that doesnt dissappear when it hits the air, it kind of stays in a smoke form and floats off with the wind. There is always small amount of gases escaping the piston rings during various strokes. These gases go down in crank case & in the crank case you have the crank shaft rotating which creates pressure.

And after thinking about my overheat comments, no way could you drive a car in that condition for very long (certainly not 1200 miles...) With the motor warm pull the breather and see if it's puffing smoke. If it is pull the PCV and make sure it has vacuum and 'rattles' freely when you shake it. When I top up my engine oil (TDI VRS), there's a small amount of smoke (or at least fumes) visible when the filler cap is removed. This is generally 5-10 minutes after the engine has been running. Also, as for oil consumption, ~300ml per 10000kms is fine, anything more than that is cause for concern. Web23 Aug 2008 · Smoke is not billowing out it is puffing out when cap is removed.I only checked once so far after hi-way use.I am running a Nappa 6637 Tymer intake-Have always changed yearly-3,000 mile oil changes since new. Truck is idleing rough and sputters up to 1400 RPM. After thatis runs fine. Exhaust at idle is strong not sucking back. Thanks John

Im not finding my vid, but i will tell you that there is some smoke coming out of the oil fill neck.
